Hamilton Accies star tells fans 'goals will come' after narrow cup win

Hamilton Accies striker Callum Smith is confident that he'll start banging in the goals, after earning his side a 1-0 win at Edinburgh City in their Premier Sports Cup opener on Friday night.

Smith admits the second half wasn't Accies' finest performance, but says it's still early in pre-season and they'll get it right.

But he says taking wins, keeping clean sheets and scoring goals will only breed confidence, ahead of their Championship opener at Raith Rovers on July 31.

The 21-year-old told Accies TV: "As a striker you want to get up and running in the first game of the season.

"I always want to make an impact in the final third, I thought I did that.

"I maybe should have scored another few, but they'll come, it's early days, and I'm just happy to get my goal.

"Every game that comes, 90 minutes, that's what you want, just minute after minute, and the more minutes we get the sharper we get and the fitter we get."

Smith added: "We came here to win the game and to keep a clean sheet as well.

"Obviously I got a goal myself, so there are positives to take.

"That's what these games are all about; I know it's pre-season, but it's a cup that we want to go far in, we want to do well in this.

"Last year we didn't do the best, so we want to prove this season, get a good start, a good few goals and clean sheets as well.

"We work on it every day in training, interchanges, quick movements, and that's what we did tonight - me, Ronan Hughes, Smithy [Lewis Smith] always moving, trying to get in behind, and I thought we did that very well in the first half.

"We know it wasn't the best performance in the second half, but at the end of the day it's a win and a clean sheet, so there are positives to take."

Smith hopes to step things up in training during the week as Accies prepare for a trip to League One side Falkirk on Saturday.

He said: "Wins bring confidence and that's what we want to do.

"We want to go there and win, have a good performance as well, and get more goals."
