Hamilton Accies release young New Zealand defender

Centre-back George Stanger has left Hamilton Accies, it has been announced.

The defender represented New Zealand at the Tokyo Olympics during the summer but has made just three appearances this season, and nine overall for the Championship club.

Hamilton's statement reads: "Defender George Stanger, 21, has been released by the club. After representing New Zealand in the Olympics in July he has played 3 times this season, and 9 apps for us all in. He goes with our good wishes."

Stanger first joined Hamilton after starting his career with League Two side Stirling Albion.

The 21-year-old attracted reported interest from Leeds United in 2019 before a loan move to East Kilbride. He has also spent time with Forfar Athletic.

The son of Scotland rugby legend Tony Stanger, George qualifies for New Zealand through his Auckland-born mum Bid and has been a regular at youth level for the Kiwis.

He holds four caps for the U20s side, alongside his call-up to the Olympics at U23s level.

Stanger last featured for Hamilton in August's SPFL Trust Trophy win over Hearts B and wasn't named in head coach Stuart Taylor's squad for Saturday's 2-1 league victory over Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

He also featured as part of Hamilton's successful youth side that competed in the UEFA Youth League in 2018.

Taylor has Jamie Hamilton, Hearts loanee Mihai Popescu and Shaun Want to call upon as natural centre-back options.

Hamilton return to action on Wednesday night when they take on Aberdeen B in the last 16 of the SPFL Trust Trophy.
