Hamilton Accies need to find a ruthless streak, warns striker Andy Ryan

Hamilton striker Andy Ryan has warned that his side must learn to kill teams off when they're on top, and stop throwing away opportunities.

Accies slumped to a 2-0 defeat at home to Ayr United on Saturday, following on from a 4-0 humbling at Arbroath the previous weekend, and Ryan was left frustrated as they simply couldn't score.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that not taking chances while conceding cheap goals is a recipe for disaster, and Ryan says it's a lesson they must learn quickly.

He said: "In the first half we were completely in control of the game, but it's the same old story where we get on top of the game, we're in complete control in the first half, possession-wise, but if you don't convert that into chances or goals then .you're not going to win games of football.

"You could see their game-plan, to sit in and try and hit us on the counter-attack, and once they got that goal it just made it even easier for them to sit in, invite us on and in the end up we couldn't create and get that goal.

"The goal took the wind out of our sails.

"It happens too often this season, when we're on top, and I think it comes from the edge of our box.

"We were attacking, they went up the park and scored, and we need to learn our lessons from that, and learn them quickly.

"It's frustrating when you don't score, especially when we're going through this wee run just now, and I'm trying that extra bit harder to try and get those goals to help the team, but it's not happened in the last couple of games."

With four points from six games, which keeps them two above Dunfermline - who have a game in hand - Saturday's clash will be perceived as a must-win even at this point, but Ryan says it's just another tough game in a difficult league.

And he says nobody at Accies were under any illusions of how big a task they have ahead of them to try and get back to the Premiership.

He said: "It's just another game we need to look forward to, we need to come in, look over this game.

"We need to address these problems where we're shipping easy goals and go into the game next week, and hopefully we can convert some of our chances.

"'People thinking we might bounce straight back up is coming from outside; we knew from the inside that it wasn't going to be easy, there's going to be a rebuilding job here, and we need to learn our lessons.

"As you saw with us going to Arbroath last week, there are no easy games in this league, every game is difficult, so we need to be at our best every week."
