Hamilton Accies hero Simon Mensing lifts the lid on ill-fated Motherwell spell

Simon Mensing may be remembered as a legend by the Hamilton Accies faithful - but his time as a Steelman wasn't so successful.

Having enjoyed success and a memorable Scottish Cup run with St Johnstone, Motherwell boss Maurice Malpas snapped up the highly-rated midfielder in 2007.

However, Malpas would soon leave the club and be replaced by Mark McGhee and coach Scott Leitch with the Saints man still completing his Perth switch.

After just four appearances, he was back in the First Division at New Douglas Park.

So, what happened? Mensing reveals all the The Lanarkshire Football Show.

"First and foremost, it was an SPL club. As an football you aspire to play in the top division," he told the Lanarkshire Live Sport team.

"At the time I was at a very good St Johnstone side so it was a difficult decision to make to leave such an established team and such a confident team.

"In my opinion at that time it was a step up the ladder."

"It was a tricky one under Mark; I'll be honest, it wasn't an ideal situation but from my point of view it was a challenge I was looking forward to albeit Mark and Scott hadn't really signed me.

"For me, I was there on merit and I thought I was good enough to be there; and I certainly worked hard while I was there.

"I've been at clubs before when managers have been there and left halfway through the season. For a lot of the boys it's a clean slate.

"All you want to do as a player is impress them. That's all I could do and what I felt I did do.

"It was a short spell; so obviously it wasn't the right fit.

He went on: "It didn't quite work out, but I wanted to play football.

"I'd been speaking to the coaching staff and Mark at the time. Motherwell had started the league campaign pretty well, so I was patient and I had to bide my time.

"I felt when results weren't going as positive as they had been I thought I deserved my chance; and I didn't feel like that happened.

"As far as I was concerned I just wanted to be playing football and that came with Billy [Reid] at Hamilton Accies."
