Hamilton Accies Hakeem Odoffin tops charts for interceptions in Europe

Hakeem Odoffin has remarkably made the most interceptions of any player under-23 in Europe.

The Hamilton Accies star has been consistently outstanding for the club since joining from Livingston in the summer.

The 22 year-old is brilliant at breaking up attacks and winning the ball back for Hamilton and that's demonstrated by his position as number one in Europe.

Accies boss Brian Rice was effusive in praise for Odoffin and believes the statistic is indicative of his impact since arriving.

He said:" "That's remarkable. He's been brilliant since we brought him to the club as a player and person. I never knew about that stat but it shows just how much he is willing to put his body on the line and get break up plays.

"We brought him in as a right-back, then he moved to centre-back then he moved to midfield. It doesn't matter where you play him you know exactly what you're going to get.

"His performance on Saturday was sensational and I can't ask any more of him."

Odoffin has made an incredible 87 interceptions this season which is a staggering 19 more than second-placed Atalanta's Cristian Romero - on-loan from Juventus.

The former Tottenham youngster has flourished since joining Accies in the summer.

Hamilton boss Brian Rice has deployed the versatile star in various positions but he has excelled in a midfield role similar to that where Alex Gogic excelled last season.

"When you put a defender into midfield they sense where the danger is - especially someone who likes to put tackles in," Rice said on moving Odoffin into a midfield role.

"They get tight because they're used to that compared to midfielders who can have a tendency to back off.

"He uses all his traits that he's developed as a defender when he plays in midfield.

"His positional play will still improve but it doesn't matter where I play him because I know what I'll get.

"He puts his heart and soul into everything. I'm delighted for him because he really enjoys being at the club which also helps."
