Hamilton Accies coach Dougie Imrie questioned by police over betting allegation

Former Hamilton Accies midfielder Dougie Imrie has been questioned by police probing match-fixing allegations.

Police have spoken to the former midfielder, who is also a coach at the club, about an alleged incident that took place during a match in the 2018/19 season. He was held without charge and released.

It was alleged that the 36-year-old was yellow carded during a match, an incident in which he had allegedly placed a bet on.

Officers at the Scottish Crime Campus at Gartcosh are leading an inquiry into bets made on specific events in games. Their specialist squads are based there.

Current rules state that players can't bet on football, and police can become involved if an allegation of fraud is raised. Players might benefit financially from a bet they could influence.

Police Scotland said: "A man was arrested on February 28 in connection with a reported incident relating to gambling in sport. He has been released pending further inquiries."

Hamilton Accies issued a statement reading: "On Thursday, February 27, one of our senior youth coaches advised Hamilton Academical Football Club that he had been contacted by the police to be questioned in relation to a yellow card incident that took place during season 2018/19.

"The coach in question advised us he has since met with the police.

"Hamilton Academical Football Club have not been contacted directly and it is our understanding that no-one has been charged with any offence.

"As the police enquiry is ongoing it would be inappropriate for the club to comment any further at this time."
