Hamilton Accies chairman Allan Maitland says season may have 'ended'

Hamilton Accies chairman Allan Maitland doesn't expect the remaining eight games to be played in this season's Premiership, and has told players to stay home until at least Monday, due to the ongoing Coronavirus outbreak.

Maitland says in an ideal world they would have a two-week break and then play the remaining games, but now doesn't expect them to be staged and said it might then be a straight choice between relegating Hearts and promoting two clubs from the Championship.

Hamilton Accies will be financially hit by the suspension of football, but Maitland says it's about managing the impact of that.

He said: "In an ideal world we would shut down for two weeks and then play the remaining eight games. I hope they find a way to play the games but I genuinely don't think that will happen.

"Does that mean relegating Hearts or adding two teams - I don't know.

"I think it was 100 per cent the correct decision to suspend football, you need to minimise the impact with as many people as you possibly can. It's absolutely the right thing, there was no choice.

"We're telling the players as of today to go home until Monday and we will try to give them an update then."

Maitland added: "I genuinely don't know what is going to happen. There hasn't been anything like this in my time. I think 'unprecedented' is the right word to use and we're in a period of uncertainty. How long is this going to be for, how much support are we going to get?

"The SPFL have already said there is no money and insurance companies aren't going to be handing cash over.

"What will happen to sponsorship, what about the Sky deal - what are they going to say?

"There will be financial implications, and they will hit clubs hard, including ours, but it's about how you manage it.

"The club will be impacted, even if it's from the point of view of the budget available for next season, and any income will be significantly reduced.

"We will miss four home games, which would have been big sellers, but there are cost savings to be made as well, because we won't need to pay for stewarding or anything else for those games, and it's about looking at what savings we can make.

"We will pay wages for March, April and May, and after that we don't know what is going to happen, but it's obviously not a good place to be.

"Everybody will be impacted by this, not just football. It's easy to over-react to what is happening but it's also vital that we don't under-react to it."
