Hamilton Accies' Callum Smith ready to play leading role in favourite position

Hamilton’s Callum Smith is eager to impress in his favoured position in the next few weeks.

Accies are missing a host of attacking options through injury and the 21 year-old is hoping to grab his opportunity.

The former Dunfermline youngster has played in a variety of positions but he favours playing as a striker where he impressed against Aberdeen last weekend.

Smith said: "I'd say that my best position is up front. I can play on the left or right but striker is my preferred position.

"There's obviously less competition for places but I still need to step up when the chance comes.

"I came on against Aberdeen and I thought I did well by making an impact.

"I hope that's just the start coming on last week. I've probably not been involved as much as I'd like in the last few weeks but hopefully I start getting game time.

"There are massive games coming up against teams close to us and I want to be involved in those games.”

Smith moved to Hamilton from Dunfermline in the summer after spending last season on loan at Airdrie in League One.

It’s a considerable jump from the third tier of Scottish football to the Premiership but Smith is happy with his adaptation.

He said: "You obviously do notice the difference but when you're playing, you don't really notice it.

"You just try and play your own games and believe in your own ability. I feel that I've done pretty well in my first season in the Premiership whenever I've came on.”

The Cowdenbeath born forward has a strong chance of starting against Livingston this afternoon.

Accies travel through to West Lothian in good form with just one defeat in their last six games and Smith admits that morale is high in the camp.

He said: "Training has been really good in the last few weeks and the boys are on a high.

"We do feel there is more confidence in the squad because results have been coming.

"Hopefully we can continue it into the next few games. Everybody knows how Livingston play because they battle hard.

"But so do we and I think it will be a good game."
