Hamilton Accies boss won't rush new signings Owolabi and Johnson

Hamilton Accies boss Brian Rice has warned fans that new signings Tunde Owolabi and Justin Johnson are a long way off a starting slot - and won't be rushed into the Premiership campaign.

The duo, who both played together at English non-league outfit FC United of Manchester in their youth days, were on trial at New Douglas Park over the summer and both signed one-year deals in the last week.

Owolabi netted 35 goals for FC United's first team last term, while Johnson is back for a second spell in Scotland following two seasons at Dundee United between 2015-17.

However, ahead of Saturday's clash at home to Ross County, Rice admitted the pair won't be in his starting plans.

Asked about what he was expecting from Johnson, who became Accies' sixth summer signing on Tuesday, Rice said: "I'm expecting Justin to get himself a bit fitter.

"He's a winger who can excite people on his day and he's definitely got something different to what else we've got here.

"He's a quiet lad and we need him to come out his shell a bit and express himself.

"He's a typical winger who will have good days and bad days. He just needs to get into the way we work here. How we play, what we do off the ball.

"He's good on the ball, he just needs to work a wee bit harder off the ball. He'll do that because he's a willing working.

"I'm hopeful that in a few weeks' time he's maybe chapping on the door to start a game.

"At this moment in time, he's nowhere near ready to start, but he's got a good 20-30 minutes in him."

Owolabi may have scored a barrel load in the Northern Premier League, but he's still to get to grips with his leap to the professional game, according to his new gaffer.

Rice said: "When you get 35 goals, that's a lot of goals in any division, but this is a massive step up from the level he's been playing at.

"Tunde is 25, but I don't think he came into professional until he was 23 I think, so it's caught him by surprise the training week, the tempo.

"He's struggling to adapt at the minute, but it's not through a lack of effort.

"He's tired quite a few days, so he falls into the same bracket as Justin at the minute.

"Thirty-five goals last year is a fantastic return - but that was last year.

"This is a new chapter. He's earned his move, but I'm not going to rush these boys. It would be unfair on them.

"They'll be ready when they are ready to go in."
