Hamilton Accies boss Stuart Taylor says discipline is key to victory against Arbroath

Hamilton Accies boss Stuart Taylor says his side will need to keep 11 players on the pitch to stand a chance of a win over Arbroath on Saturday.

The sides clashed at Gayfield back in September, with Dick Campbell's side running out 4-0 winners, the latter two goals coming after defender Jamie Hamilton was sent off.

Taylor says there are already fine margins in football, but says that clash in Arbroath could have been very different, had his side taken their chances.

He said: "[We need to] keep 11 players on the pitch. It's very important, you give yourself a chance of winning games.

"A couple of weeks later we had made improvements, we went down to 10 men against Inverness Caley, defended incredibly well for the majority of the game, lost a goal, but that [game at Arbroath] could have been different.

"There was nothing in the first half. We hit the crossbar, could have been 1-0 up, made a mistake at the back and they scored just before half-time.

"In the second half we were still the better side, got hit on the counter. It's fine margins; we were in a situation when we could have got a ball in the box in a three v two situation, and we would have been in a strong position to at least get a shot away at goal.

"We made a slack pass, they went up the park to score and it was 2-0. We were then down to 10 men, so the big key thing is to make sure we keep 11 players on the pitch."

Accies were 1-0 up on Saturday through Lewis Smith's early strike, but were held to a draw when the hosts struck deep into stoppage with a goal that has now been credited as a Reegan Mimnaugh own goal.

With Arbroath's visit followed by Raith Rovers the following week, Taylor hopes his side can take some of that frustration out on their opponents.

He said: "That is football; the fine margins that we spoke about in the Arbroath game.

"To get a draw out of Saturday's game felt like a defeat, it felt like a win for them, but again, the culture we're trying to create is it's a strong mentality, you learn from it and you move on.

"It was a sore one for us definitely, we controlled the full game, but we've learned from that and we know we need to do better, going forward.

"It's two home games, but if it's two away games, we look on it as games that we want to go and win.

"Since I've been in here there has not been any single game we've gone into saying 'listen, we'll take a draw here'.

"It's not the way we want to be, it's not the mentality that I'm trying to create or the culture that I'm trying to create, but it's about trying to win every single game we go into, and when we're in that game it's about trying to get three points, no matter the situation.

"We need to have that mentality and that work ethic that the supporters are so proud of, and we were so close to getting the win on Saturday.

"We deal with it and we move on, but we learn from it, which is the most important thing."

Taylor doesn't expect many differences to his squad and says his long-term injured players are still going to be missing for the foreseeable future, such as midfielder Scott Martin.

Taylor said: ""We have a few that are doing well in training, but your Scotty Martins and stuff, part of their rehab programme is that they need to play 45 minutes.

"Scott has been out so long he needs to play 30, 35, then 60. Once he's played maybe a 60 or two 60-minute games, then we can start looking to get him back on the bench.

"One thing I won't do is put anybody at risk of re-injuring or being injured, and it's important that we get them strong and able to be back in about the first-team.

"If it means taking an extra week I'd rather do that and they be back fit and stay fit, so that's where we are with them all and there's nobody who is back in and ready to play from what it was last week.

"Miko Virtanen has come along and trained very well, so he might be back in contention for being in the squad."
