Hamilton Accies boss presents top to 89-year-old fan who lost daughter to cancer

A Hamilton Accies fan who lost his daughter to cancer and saw his other child battle off coronavirus received a special visit from club gaffer Brian Rice today.

Rice and Accies coach George Cairns made 89-year-old George Hosie's day with a socially distant visit to his front garden to present him with a signed top and scarf from the first team.

George has supported the club since he was a young boy and has been a season-ticket holder with Accies for 84 years.

It was a special moment for the Accies superfan, who has gone through the heartbreak of losing his daughter Lynn to cancer and watching his other daughter, Janice, a nurse at Monklands Hospital, fight off coronavirus.

George is also recovering from a mini-stroke he suffered last month.

His grandson Stephen Whiteside - Lynn's son - told Lanarkshire Live Sport: "He was really surprised by their visit which made it more special.

"He has had a really hard time recently and has only just getting back on his feet.

"He has been worried about when he will get back to the football and if he will still get to keep the seat that he has had for a number of years at New Douglas Park.

"They said they would make sure he gets to keep his seat, which was very reassuring for him."

They Accies coaches chatted for a while about how George has been coping whilst shielding and about many Accies players past and present.

Stephen added: "They also spoke about Billy Reid who my grampa describes as his favourite Accies manager and about how much he likes Brian Easton, who will always talk to him if he isn’t playing.

"Both Brian and George were so nice and were happy to spend 15 minutes or so chatting away.

"They made an old man very, very happy. It’s these wee things that make Accies as a club stand out from others.

"I am thankful to them both for taking the time to visit him.”
