Hamilton Accies boss admits no more signings likely after 'cheeky bid fails'

Hamilton Accies boss Stuart Taylor admits his transfer deadline day business is likely over after moves for two players fell through.

Taylor wouldn't reveal what position he was looking at, but fans were desperate to see the club bring in a striker and they had been heavily linked with a move for Oli Shaw, who has joined Championship rivals Kilmarnock from Ross County.

The 46-year-old admitted the club were priced out for their targets and admitted they tried a "cheeky" offer for one of them before the player opted for elsewhere.

Accies brought in left-back Luke Matheson on loan from Wolves on Friday and today landed Hearts centre-back Mihai Popsec.

But asked if he was still hoping to sign anyone before tonight's midnight deadline, Taylor, whose side play Hearts B in the SPFL Trust Trophy tonight, said: "I don't think so.

"Something fell through this morning and it wasn't something we could compete with.

"We did our best, went really strong with it, but it was something we were able to do.

"We managed to get Luke and Mihai across the line, which is great in terms of improving the squad and what they will bring.

"We did try for another position and we tried it with a couple of players, but both of them fell through.

"We just couldn't compete in terms of finances and the club that the other player went to was proper top level and we just couldn't compete.

"It was probably a cheeky offer, but I felt there was a good possibility. We gave it a go but it just didn't happen for us."

The news will be a blow to fans, but Taylor insists after an impressive display in the 2-1 win Queen of the South on Saturday he has a squad capable of doing the business in the Championship.

He added: "I'm still really happy with the squad we've got.

"When I look at Saturday's performance, if we keep playing like that there is no need to strengthen the team further."
