Hamilton Accies beat English clubs to snap up defender Sam Woods on loan from Crystal Palace

Hamilton Accies have snapped up defender Sam Woods on loan from Crystal Palace until the end of this season.

The New Douglas Park club beat teams in League 1 and 2 to sign the 21-year-old Englishman, and the influence of Palace stars stars James McCarthy and James McArthur - who both started their careers at New Douglas Park - was a big factor in his decision to join.

A chat with boss Brian Rice also played a huge part in convincing Woods to make the switch to the Premiership club.

Sam, who has signed a contract extension at Crystal Palace until June 2021,  said: "I had a bit of interest in League 1 and 2 in England, but once I spoke to Brian Rice he convinced me that I should come here, and after I spoke to James McCarthy and James McArthur as well, it just felt like the right club.

"The 'Maccas' are great lads and as soon as I heard about the interest from Hamilton they spoke to me and said I was definitely to come here, that it's a great club, and that basically convinced me.

"They said good luck, and to work hard, and that I would have a great time."

Woods added: "I'm very happy to join the club. Everyone has been very welcoming, and I'm just excited to get started, really.

"I've made three appearances for Palace and I'm expecting it to be more physical, but I won't know until I've played my first game, which I'm looking forward to.

"Fans can expect a very physical defender. I love defending, heading the ball, defending crosses, tackling and putting my body on the line, really.

"I can't wait to get started."
