Hamilton Accies are right to take a chance on young players, says Ronan Hughes

Ronan Hughes says Hamilton Accies are doing the right thing by giving youth a chance.

The 20-year-old midfielder was part of a young side that finished the Betfred Cup game at Kilmarnock on Saturday, having replaced Alex Gogic inside extra-time.

Hamilton might have lost 1-0 in the end, but Hughes reckons they’re doing a lot right.

He said: “Brian Rice gives youth a chance and that gives us all confidence. Young Jamie Hamilton got in on Saturday and he was brilliant, so that just gives the rest of us confidence that if we get our chance we can do the same thing.

“The gaffer has said to us all that if we get picked on a Saturday it’s based on training and everything, so we just need to train well.

“That’s the way it should be, I think, that if you’re good enough you’re old enough, and if you’re good enough you should be playing.”

Hughes has been impressed with performances in the last two games against Kilmarnock, including a 2-0 league win, and says Accies must build on it.

“We didn’t get the result we wanted at Rugby Park,” he said, “but on the Saturday before that we were good and got the win, so that gives us confidence.”
