The best of the Hamilton Accies and Motherwell derby day heroes who helped earn Lanarkshire bragging rights

Hamilton Accies host Motherwell in the Premiership on Saturday for the chance to take derby bragging rights in the third clash of the season.

We at Lanarkshire Live Sport have taken a look at the top five heroes from each team over the last few years:

Hamilton

Ali Crawford

In two seasons, Crawford scored seven goals against Motherwell.

He netted twice in a 4-0 win in September 2014, and bagged another double in a 4-2 defeat in September 2016, adding to goals in a 5-0 win in January 2015, a 2-0 win in April 2015, and a 3-3 draw in January 2, 2016.

Darian MacKinnon

Darian played a major role in several derby encounters for Hamilton, but he popped a shot into the top corner during a memorable 3-3 draw at Fir Park on January 2, 2016.

Lucas Tagliapietra and Darian overturned a 1-0 deficit after Scott McDonald had put Motherwell into the lead, but the Australian levelled a minute into the second half.

Louis Moult put Motherwell ahead again, but Keith Lasley was sent off for handling an Ali Crawford shot in the box, and the midfielder scored the penalty for 3-3.

James McCarthy

James McCarthy played several memorable games for Hamilton, which eventually earned him a move to the English Premiership.

One particularly strong derby memory was on December 20, 2008, when he scored a double to down Motherwell 2-0 at New Douglas Park, and he even popped up to clear a John Sutton header off the line to keep that lead intact.

Tony Andreu

Tony is a Hamilton hero from their play-off victory, if nothing else, but he scored in his first league match against Motherwell, in a 4-0 win at Fir Park.

He did the business again in a 5-0 triumph at New Douglas Park on January 1, 2015, which ended up being his second-last goal for Accies that time around. He netted the winner against St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park before joining Alex Neil at Norwich City.

Andreu's only other Hamilton goal in a loan spell was last season when he scored a late penalty to beat Dundee 1-0 and relegate the Dens Park side.

Steven Boyd

Steven goes into derby folklore for his stunning winner against Motherwell at Fir Park last August.

Motherwell dominated the game, but when Ross Cunningham's free kick was blocked by the defensive wall, Boyd reacted fastest to lash a spectacular volley into the top right corner to take all three points.

Motherwell

Louis Moult

'King Louis' signed from Wrexham in June 2015 and racked up 7 goals against Hamilton including four in the 4-2 win at Fir Park on September 17, 2016.

All of his derby goals were important, including one in a 3-3 Fir Park draw on January 2, 2016, a late leveller in a 1-1 draw at New Douglas Park on December 31, 2016, and in a 1-0 win at Hamilton on May 14, 2017.

Moult moved to Preston on January 1, with more than a few Accies fans breathing a sigh of relief.

David Turnbull

David broke through to the Motherwell team in February 2018 and has still scored three goals in two games.

The young midfielder helped himself to a double as he and Jake Hastie blitzed Hamilton at Fir Park to wrap up a 3-0 win by half-time on March 9, 2019. He also scored in a 1-1 draw at New Douglas Park on April 20.

Lukas Jutkiewicz

The Southampton-born striker, who currently plays for Birmingham City, scored in a 2-2 draw at New Douglas Park on November 7, as he and Jamie Murphy levelled goals by Simon Mensing and Marco Paixao.

Jutkiewicz scored the winner in a 1-0 triumph at Fir Park on February 6 with a real poacher's goal, scrambling the ball over the line when Tom Hateley's corner wasn't cleared.

Scott McDonald

'Skippy' scored two crucial goals on derby day to rescue a crucial point for the Steelmen during a 3-3 draw at Fir Park on January 2, 2016.

Lionel Ainsworth
