Hamilton 2 Ayr 1: Marios Ogkmpoe and Charlie Trafford wonderstrike enough for Accies Betfred Cup win

Hamilton got their first points of their Betfred Cup campaign with a hard-fought win over Ayr.

Following the midweek humbling by Annan, Accies bounced back thanks to goals from Marios Ogkmpoe and Charlie Trafford in Group H.

Michael Moffat netted a consolation for the visitors at New Douglas Park.

The hosts controlled the early exchanges but struggled to carve out any clear-cut chances. After 11 minutes, Hakeem Odoffin was the first to worry the visiting defence.

Accies' top scorer met a dangerous David Templeton corner but the defender's thumping header went well over the crossbar.

Ogkmpoe, who turned 26 today, would net the opener after 19 minutes as he deftly tapped Scott McMann's inch-perfect cross from the left at close range and become the first Accies striker to score this season

Birthday boy Ogkmpoe would test 'keeper Viliami Sinisalo again after a darting run down the right from Callum Smith allowed the pacey attacker to square the ball to the Greek striker, but the shot-stopper got the low block to deny a second inside 33 minutes.

Moments later Brian Rice's men would have their second as a corner was headed up into the air and fell to Trafford, who unleashed an inch-perfect volley into the bottom corner.

Into the second half, Mark Kerr's outfit looked to respond inside 60 minutes as a floated Andy Murdoch cross found the head of Jack Baird but he fired the shot wide.
