Egypt has been seeking to consolidate the truce agreement in the Gaza Strip by reviewing security arrangements with Hamas movement to prevent any possible deterioration, Palestinian sources told Asharq Al-Awsat.

The sources confirmed that a Hamas delegation was in Cairo this week upon an Egyptian invitation.

Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman, said in a tweet that a delegation headed by Rouhi Mushtaha, a member of the political leadership of the movement, arrived in Cairo.

He added that the Hamas officials would discuss several issues, including bilateral relations, the Palestinian issue, efforts to end the suffering of Gaza’s people, and the ongoing Israeli aggression against the Palestinians and their holy sites.

The sources said Egypt wanted a thorough review of the developments in the enclave

“The Egyptians want more precise explanations on the recent rocket fire, how Hamas is controlling the situation, and the means to contain the flare-up,” they noted.

Israel has accused Islamic Jihad of increasing tensions in the Gaza Strip front to serve Iranian interests. It said the group was behind all the rockets fired in one week from the Strip, adding that the latest attacks were aimed at pleasing Iran.

Islamic Jihad does not hide its relationship with Tehran but asserts that it does not work for it.

The group is the second largest force in the Gaza Strip after Hamas. Palestinian sources confirmed that the movement was fully convinced that Jihad was behind the firing of rockets.

Officials representing the two movements met in Gaza for a truce discussion, followed by the departure of a Hamas delegation to Cairo.
