Cases of Covid-19 continued to plunge in Halton last week as the borough saw the fastest decline in coronavirus infections of anywhere in the city region.
In the week up to February 9, Halton’s infection rate fell by 38.4% to 225.6 new cases of Covid-19 per 100,000 residents.
This was by far the biggest fall of any borough in the city region and Halton is the only part of the region to have seen a steady fall in infections.
Other boroughs have seen progress against the virus slow down over the past week.
Over the same week Halton saw a significant drop in deaths from Covid-19, recording only four in the seven days up to February 9 compared to 19 the week before.
In total, there have been 11 deaths in the borough from Covid-19 so far in February, significantly less than in other city region boroughs.
The rapid decline in deaths is another sign of continuing progress in cutting transmissions and the easing of pressure on local health services.
At Warrington Hospital, the number of Covid-positive patients continued to fall this week and is now below the peak of the second wave.

Patient numbers are still high with 160 people with Covid-19 on Warrington and Halton’s wards on Friday (February 12) but this is well below the peak of 243 seen in mid-January.
