'Halo: Campaign Evolved' Fan Discovery Claims No Offline Play Is Coming, Much to the Ire of Players

A fan who has obtained an early physical copy of "Halo: Campaign Evolved" for PS5 has uncovered evidence suggesting the game will require a constant online connection, even for players who only want to experience the campaign alone.

'Halo: Campaign Evolved' Discovery: No Offline Play, Mode

As shared to the leak account called "Does It Play" on X, the fan provided screenshots showing that booting up the physical Collector's Edition disc for the first time triggers a mandatory update before the game can be played.

Beyond that initial install, a login also appears to be required, suggesting an online connection stays necessary even after the update finishes downloading.

Adding to that discovery, the PlayStation Store listing for "Halo: Campaign Evolved" explicitly states that online play is required, while no such requirement currently appears on the Xbox or Steam store pages for the same game.

The physical disc obtained by the fan also contains less than 38GB of data, a notable gap compared to the roughly 100GB install size listed for the Steam PC version.

Leakers have theorized this size difference could mean the disc build predates the game's final version, possibly dating back to an earlier build from around April.

Fans Now Complain Against 'Halo: Campaign Evolved'

According to GameRant's report, news of the potential online requirement has frustrated segments of the "Halo" community, arriving at a sensitive moment for broader conversations around game ownership and preservation.

The backlash comes shortly after PlayStation announced it would stop producing physical discs for future games starting in 2028, a decision that has already fueled concerns about long-term access to games players have purchased.

Online only requirements carry an added risk beyond mere inconvenience, since games locked behind a login system can become unplayable if servers are ever shut down permanently.

Even if Xbox eventually takes steps to preserve access after official support ends, temporary server outages or account authorization issues could still leave "Halo: Campaign Evolved" unplayable in the meantime. This also applies to players who wish to play the game's campaign solo.

PlayStation Version Requires Online Play

As it stands, the online requirement appears specific to the PlayStation version of "Halo: Campaign Evolved" based on current store listings, while Xbox and Steam have not shown the same requirement so far. Regardless of platform, anyone picking up a physical copy should expect a substantial day-one download before the game becomes playable at all.

This stands in contrast to the original "Halo: Combat Evolved," which has long supported both offline single player and offline co-op play without requiring any internet connection.

"Halo: Campaign Evolved" is set to support online co-op and local co-op alongside cross-platform play across all systems, but whether that flexibility extends to solo offline play remains uncertain heading into its July 28 release.

Despite the concerns, the online requirement likely won't stop most fans from picking up the game, given the lasting popularity the original "Halo" campaign has held within the franchise's history.
