"Halo: Campaign Evolved's" early access availability has been plagued with issues, as many players have claimed that they were unable to play the game on the Xbox.
The issue affected a lot of Xbox players, with many expressing their dismay, as getting early access meant they had to pay extra when they preordered it. Instead, they are now getting left behind in precious playing time.
'Halo: Campaign Evolved' Early Access Unavailable on Xbox
"Halo: Campaign Evolved" offers a $69.99 Premium Edition that includes five days of early access ahead of the game's full July 28 release. Players who already own the $49.99 Standard Edition, or those with Xbox Game Pass, also have the option to pay an extra $20 to upgrade specifically for early access.
Instead of getting into the game, players in both groups were met with error messages claiming the game wasn't out yet.
According to GameSpot, which independently verified the issue, the problem appeared to affect essentially everyone on Xbox and the Xbox PC app who purchased either the Premium Edition or the Premium Edition Upgrade, rather than just a limited group of players.
Notably, the same launch day problems did not appear to affect players on PS5, where the game reportedly launched without similar issues.
Players Complain About Early Access Despite Paying Extra
Frustration spread quickly across Halo-focused social media accounts and in replies to official posts. Many players pointed out that Halo Support's initial statement described the issue as affecting only "some" players, even though it appeared to impact the vast majority of Xbox premium buyers.
The situation marked a rocky start for the highly anticipated remake, especially given that "Halo" remains one of the franchise names most closely tied to Xbox as a platform.
This wasn't the remake's only source of friction with fans. "Halo: Campaign Evolved" had already drawn criticism over certain gameplay changes, including the addition of sprint, and PS5 players specifically ran into complaints about needing both a PlayStation and a Microsoft account just to access local co-op.
Did Xbox, Halo Studios Fix the Issue Now?
Halo Support first acknowledged the problem through a post on X, stating the team was investigating reports that some players on Xbox consoles and the Xbox PC app who purchased the Premium Edition or Premium Edition Upgrade were unable to access the game.
In a separate post, Xbox Support also acknowledged a connection issue on Xbox's services and features, but it was not confirmed if these two are related.

Halo Support later clarified that players either need to perform a power cycle reset on the console or to run the "wsreset" command on the Start menu to fix the early access issues. The team also pointed affected players toward a support article detailing which specific editions include the feature, and to submit a ticket should the problem persist.
Despite the rocky launch, "Halo: Campaign Evolved" has been generally well received critically, holding an 81 on Metacritic, with GameSpot's own review praising it as the best way to experience Master Chief's original story.
