Halo 3 was released on PC today - here's everything you need to know

Halo 3 has gone live across all PC platforms as the latest Master Chief Collection (MCC) update has unlocked the game earlier than planned.

Microsoft initially told people that the game would become available to people who have Halo: The Master Chief Collection – a package which includes remastered versions of six Halo games made especially for the PC – at 6pm on July 14.

Community Director at 343 Industries, Brian Jarrard confirmed on Twitter that the update unlocking Halo 3 in the collection is now live.

“Yep, Halo 3 PC and the MCC update are now live a bit early. It’s been nearly 13 years, we figure you’ve waited long enough. Note some services may still be coming online ahead of our “official” launch tomorrow AM”, he wrote.

Halo 3 is the final entry in the original Halo trilogy before the games departed from focusing around Master Chief, the green armour-clad alien killer we all know and love.

PC players should now be able to start playing Halo 3, but as mentioned by Jarrard, there are some services which might not be available until later today.

Now that Halo 3 is available, you'll be able to begin downloading the main campaign mode and the Halo 3 multiplayer mode to your PC if you have the MCC, along with a new update.

This update has also brought about some changes to Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

There are audio fixes, more customisation options than the original game, and there will be another season of challenges.

Forge, a map and multiplayer creation mode, is also going to be added to Halo: Reach, Halo 2: Anniversary and Halo 3 in this update.

With the release of Halo 3, 343 Industries has said that the next game to come to the MCC will be Halo 3: ODST Firefight, saying in a blog update that it is "next on the docket once Halo 3 releases".

Firefight is a survival mode which can be played cooperatively or solo and you have to fend off wave after wave of powerful Covenant forces without dying.
