Halloween tour of South Shields Town Hall will unearth its spooky past

A Halloween-theme heritage tour is out to scare visitors to South Shields Town Hall this October with the promise of a mixture of "fun and fear".

The new spooky tour is inviting people to visit behind the scenes of the town landmark and learn about some of those who walked its marble corridors in the past and about some strange happenings there since.

And those who sign up for the adult-only event will at least have some comfort in knowing that they are getting spooked for a good cause, as the tour will be helping to raise funds for the Mayor’s Charity.

The Mayor herself, Coun Pat Hay, will be hosting the October 27 tour of the Grade II-listed Edwardian building, where visitors will have choice of two timings: 6pm and 8pm.

She said: “ South Shields Town Hall is a fascinating building steeped in history and our heritages tours, enabling people to go behind the scenes, always prove to be extremely popular.

“Following the success of recent tours for Heritage Open Days we are giving people an opportunity to hear an alternative history of the building, to learn more about some of the civic figures who have walked through the marble corridors in years gone by as well strange stories of ghostly goings-on.

“While the building is magnificent with its grand sweeping staircase and oak-panelled chambers, it also lends itself as an amazing backdrop to create an eerie atmosphere."

She added: "With some extra features and surprises in store, we hope to add an air of fun and fear – perfect for Halloween.

“The tours will also help us to raise money for some great causes in South Tyneside."

She advised people to book early as tickets are expected to sell quickly.

The South Tyneside Mayor has chosen The Customs House and Cancer Connections to be the main beneficiaries of the Mayor’s Charity fund during her time in office.

Tickets for the Halloween Town Hall Tour cost £5 each. To book call the Civic Office on ( 0191) 424 7331 or email civic.office@southtyneside.gov.uk
