Staff at Wishaw’s Neonatal surprised parents with home-made costumes last week.
The nurses gave the outfits to babies and left them with the parents to keep.
One baby who received an outfit was 54 day old Devyn Gibson from Shotts.
Devyn was born at 23 weeks and six days and weighed only 1lb 1oz.
Devyn’s dad, Jamie Gibson, 23, said: “The nurses gave us all a surprise when they brought the costume to us.
“They put the outfit on her and we took a few photos of her in it.
“They always do things like this, little surprises.
“People don’t realise how big a boost it can give parents who might find the experience hard.
“It makes life seem that bit more normal.”
The staff at the unit are always trying to make parents feel comfortable and at home.
Charge midwife Lynsey Strachan said: “It is all about making those lasting memories for the mums and dads who have kids in Neonatal.
“It’s not easy having a baby in here so we do what we can to make them feel at home.
“All the babies got a costume and the parents took photos with them. They would be dressing them up if they weren’t in here so we feel that it should be no different.
“The nurse who made the costumes, Sam, is so good with this type of thing.”
The unit has been in the spotlight this year for the tremendous documentary ‘Tiny Lives’, which aired last month on BBC.
A lot of people don’t know about the unit or what they do, including Jamie.
He said: “I had no idea this place existed until me and Debbie (Devyn’s mum) had our baby.
“You can’t prepare for something like this but the staff are so accommodating.”
