With Halloween coming up on Oct. 31, domestic shipping of pumpkins is in full swing in the Kita-Sorachi area of Hokkaido.

Orange pumpkins measuring from 20 to 30 centimeters in diameter and weighing around 5 kilograms are lined up at the house of Tadayuki Ikuta, 64, in Numata, Hokkaido.

"Thanks to the great weather, the coloring is just beautiful on these pumpkins," said his wife, Yukari, 56. "I think this year there are many children who have to stay at home, so I hope our pumpkins can help make their homes look more festive" for Halloween.

It is estimated 51 farms will send out about 200,000 pumpkins this year, according to the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives in Kita-Sorachi. The work should continue into October.
