Long Beach Halloween party mass shooting leaves three dead with gunman on run

A mass shooting at a Halloween party has left three men dead and nine people injured as police hunt at least one gunman who is on the run.

There were distressing and chaotic scenes as firefighters treated the victims, who were wearing fancy dress, in the garden of a house where up to 30 shots were fired.

Aerial footage showed three bodies in the garden following the bloodbath in Long Beach, California.

The other nine victims were taken to hospital as the Los Angeles suburb's emergency services declared a mass-casualty incident.

Witnesses said victims dressed in costumes were limping after being shot.

Neighbours told local media that the house was hosting a Halloween party when shots rang out at around 10.45pm local time on Tuesday.

The gunman was still at large, according to the Long Beach Fire Department.

Neighbours told reporters they saw a car swerving before they heard between 20 and 30 gunshots.

A local resident, who only gave his name as Martin, told the Long Beach Post he was walking to a liquor store when he heard a car swerving and accelerating.

He added: “Then all I hear is pop, pop, pop, a bunch of pops – maybe like 20 shots. It was a lot."

Martin said he ducked for cover and ran back towards his home.

Another reisdent, Lambert Alcendor, 21, told the Post he was walking home from a liquor store when he saw a white car swerving and heard 20 to 30 shots.

He ran from the scene and believed the shots were fired from the car.

Local resident Oscar Cancio wrote on Twitter that he thought the gunshots were fireworks.

He told the Post that victims dressed in Halloween costumes were limping after being shot.

The Long Beach Fire Department said three men were dead and nine people were taken to local hospitals.

Firefighter-paramedics set up a triage in the front garden alongside a neighbouring nail salon.

Fire spokesman Jake Heflin told reporters that rescuers arrived to a scene "full of chaos".

Three men were pronounced dead at the scene and nine others were taken to local hospitals, five of them immediately.

Long Beach Police have not yet said if more than one gunman was involved.

The force urged people to stay away from the area.
