So spooky it even has cemetery as part of its name, Cemetery Gates is a recently updated former lodge house with a graveyard on the doorstep. The property, which dates back to 1878, is within commuting distance of Glasgow and Edinburgh. A fixed price of £140,000 offers flexible space for (the) living: a second reception room could be used as a third bedroom – that’s if you can sleep with all those gravestones just outside the window ...

Reputed to be one of Britain’s most haunted houses, the 17th century Wymering Manor goes under the hammer today. With 10 bedrooms, four receptions, a grand entrance hall and a chapel, there is plenty of room to rattle around in – whether you’re dead or alive. As well as locals on ghost-hunting tours, film crews from TV’s Most Haunted have also paid a visit. Formerly a youth hostel, it needs work to turn it into a family home, so it’s not for buyers who get a fright from a bit of DIY. The guide price is £350,000. The details say it’s sold with vacant possession – those possessing it may disagree.

The righteous may be able to sleep tight in this redeveloped college in Scotland’s capital city, but the on-site chapel may spook those with a guilty conscience – and we dare anyone to go in there after dark. The main building is an arts and craft property boasting 13,864 square feet of accommodation and is on the market at offers over £2.5m, while the detached staff house may be sold with it or separately for £700,000.

Another one with plenty of haunting potential, this three-bedroomed cottage dates back to the 1850s and was designed by architect Sydney Smirke. Inside, this former parsonage boasts a large reception room, study and en suite to the master bedroom. Outside, beyond the landscaped garden is Brookwood Cemetery – formerly known as the London Necropolis. It was once the largest cemetery in the world and more than 240,000 have been buried there. That’s an awful lot of ghosts. Price: £585,000.

There's nothing obviously spooky about this house, but it lies just yards away from one of England's most haunted pubs. According to Time Travel-Britain, guests at The Mermaid Inn (main pic) in Rye, East Sussex, have reported seeing people walk through walls and have been troubled by the appearance of a ghostly figure of a woman and a man dressed in old-fashioned clothes sitting on their bed. The Mermaid even appeared on the first ever series of Most Haunted. The three-bedroom house (inset), by contrast, is a bright and likeable Grade II -isted period townhouse with an open plan kitchen and dining area, up for £335,000.
