Hall of frame: George Michael and David Bowie to feature in new Mark Allan photography exhibition

Classical conductors share the stage with music icons including George Michael and David Bowie in a new photography exhibition.

The pictures, taken by veteran photographer Mark Allan, also include Sir Simon Rattle, Amy Winehouse and Freddie Mercury.

He took an iconic picture of the Queen frontman at the Live Aid concert in 1985 — a performance that was recreated for hit film Bohemian Rhapsody.

Allan said: “I’d managed to get some tickets and just by running in I got to the front... It was just being in the right place, though it didn’t feel like it at the time because I wanted to be with all the press photographers.”

Allan, who started taking pictures of bands while studying at Goldsmiths, is a regular at venues including the BBC Maida Vale Studios and the Barbican. He said: “I came to classical music late, about 10 years ago but I’m really fascinated by conductors.”

The exhibition is at the City of London Corporation’s Barbican Music Library from April 4 to June 29.
