Hall of Fame coach Don Shula has passed away, cut his coaching teeth in Detroit

Sad news to kick off the week. Legendary NFL head coach Don Shula has passed away. The Hall-of-Fame coach was 90.

Shula is on the Mt. Rushmore of NFL head coaches, the winningest coach in league history with 328 wins across 35 seasons with the Colts and Dolphins. His Dolphins teams made six Super Bowls, winning two. Shula also won another NFL Championship with the Colts.

Before he took over the Baltimore Colts in 1963, Shula was the defensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions in 1961-1962. He led those Lions to top-5 finishes in both total defense and scoring defense both seasons, though the Lions failed to make the postseason either year. Led by Hall-of-Famers Dick Lane, Joe Schmidt, Dick Lebeau, Alex Karras and Yale Lary, Shula’s defense in Detroit was one of the best of its era.

Our deepest sympathies are with the Shula family and all the players and coaches he touched throughout his long and vibrant life.
