Halftime analysis: Panthers pounding Cardinals 21-7

The Panthers lead the Cardinals 21-7 at halftime of a game they have mostly dominated so far.

Here’s how things are going in all three phases.

Offense

Teddy Bridgewater showed off his wheels in the first half, converting a fourth down on a bootleg run and then scoring on the second drive, scrambling into the end zone from 18 yards out to finish it off. Patrick Peterson picked him off on an overthrow on the next drive though, leading to an Arizona touchdown on the ensuing possession. Drops by D.J. Moore and Curtis Samuel haven’t helped the passing game, which is still a work in progress. Robby Anderson (five catches, 74 yards) continues to be their only reliable receiver. The Panthers are running the ball well, though. Mike Davis has posted 48 yards and a touchdown on nine carries.

Defense

It’s not just hyperbole or opposing coaches buttering them up. This defense really is getting better every week. The unit has played disciplined ball so far, containing Kyler Murray as a rushing threat (three carries, 15 yards) and not allowing Kenyan Drake or Chase Edmonds to get going, either. The pass coverage has been far from perfect, but it’s dramatically improved from Week 1. Brian Burns has been a great burden for the Cardinals offensive line, getting a few pressures and two quarterback hits. Murray’s thrown for just 54 passing yards and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins has managed 17 yards on five catches.

Special teams

Joey Slye hasn’t been nearly as busy as last week, which is a good thing. He’s hit three extra point attempts and hasn’t had to try a field goal yet.

The Panthers receive to begin the third quarter.
