Halfords gives an update on Newport stores as the chain pushes ahead with UK closures

Halfords has given an update on its store and autocentre in Newport as the chain continues with its plans to close stores across the UK.

The bike and car parts retailer confirmed last July that it will close up to 60 stores and garages across the UK by April, putting a number of jobs at risk.

And on Tuesday, the chain confirmed the Halfords Autocentre on Ebenezer Terrace in Newport will be among the outlets closing for good.

In a statement, a Halfords spokesperson confirmed its retail store and autocentre in Pontypridd will also be closing.

It is not known how many jobs will be affected, but the company said it was hoping to redeploy staff to other locations or into different roles.

The Halfords retail store in East Retail Park in Maesglas will not be affected.

"As we announced last July, we were always planning to exit a small percentage of our autocentres and retail stores and this includes both the Halfords retail store and autocentre at Pontypridd, Lennox Retail Park and the autocentre located at Newport, Ebenezer Terrace," a spokesperson from Halfords said.

"We are working hard to support those affected and are hopeful of being able to redeploy colleagues at a different location or offer them one of a wide range of new service-orientated roles."

Newport has been hit with a number of retail closures in the past six months, and last week a representative for Debenhams was unable to confirm the long-term future of its anchor store in Friars Walk, as the retailer continues with its liquidation process.
