Half-time 'wisdom and belief' sparked Cambridge into stunning Newcastle United

Cambridge United defender Jack Iredale has revealed that Mark Bonner gave his side some 'words of wisdom' at half-time in their 1-0 FA Cup win over Newcastle United.

With 41 places seperating the two teams in the pyramid, the League One outfit produced one of the shocks of the day in front of a sell-out crowd at St James' Park.

After a cagey opening 45 minutes, Joe Ironside popped up with the winner just before the hour mark to spark jubilant scenes in the away end and it helped The U's to a famous cup upset.

Iredale, who was part of Cambridge's back-line that battled superbly to preserve the clean sheet, admitted that they were given some tactical advice at the break which proved to be instrumental in their win.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live : "We spoke before the game about keeping ourselves in the game for as long as possible and we broke the game down into little chunks and got through different periods in the game.

"At half-time, the gaffer gave us some tactical information, a couple of words of wisdom and belief and that we had nothing to fear.

"We went out to try and enjoy the moment as much as possible while trying to give the best account of ourselves. That all seemed to go right so I'm really happy with it."

This is the first time Cambridge have beaten higher level opposition in the competition this season after beating Northampton Town and Exeter City in the first and second round.

The U's have also made a mixed start to their league campaign and sit in 16th, four points above the relegation zone after winning just six of their first 23 matches.

Despite that, Bonner's men didn't look like a struggling third tier side and put on a determined performance against a strong-looking Mapgies, with Kieran Trippier and Allan Saint-Maximim amongst those involved.

But Iredale has claimed that the memory of beating Premier League opposition and reaching the fourth-round will stay with him forever, admitting it's 'indescribable'.

"It was almost like slow motion really," he added.

"Adam May was put in behind, it came off the 'keeper, Knibbsy tacked him and had a shot which came off the defender's head and Joe finally managed to knock the ball in with a good finish.

"It was all like slow motion and the feeling we had was indescribable I would say.

"These days don't come around too often when you're playing in the lower leagues. To be able to win there and that will stay with me forever."
