Half of us don't expect a fair price when selling a car

Half of motorists in the UK (49%) say that they wouldn’t expect to get a fair price when selling their car, while one in five worry they’ll get scammed or ripped off, according to research from carwow.

carwow surveyed 2,000 people via its online research panel and one in three (31%) respondents admitted that when they sold their last car, they had either little or no idea what it was worth before selling. Almost half (46%) said they think they could have got more for it than they did. One in four (23%) say selling a car always takes ‘longer than it should’, rating the process worse than visiting the in-laws in terms of time dragging on.

Overall, most respondents (73%) said they had concerns about selling their car. The top five concerns are:

  1. I won’t get the price it deserves
  2. Someone will try and scam me or rip me off
  3. The process of negotiating a price
  4. Not knowing who to trust
  5. The amount of time it takes

Furthermore, most (52%) of motorists admit that they have held onto a car that they either wanted or needed to sell for too long, just to avoid the selling process.

Hugo Griffiths, Features Editor at carwow said: “Our research shows that selling a car can cause quite a lot of stress for motorists. They get anxious about the process, they feel uncertain about what their car is worth and feel uneasy about negotiating, which often means they delay selling. Then, when they finally do sell, many worry they’ve been sold short.

“But selling a car shouldn’t be stressful - motorists shouldn’t be fearing the process or worrying they are going to be ripped off. There should be a clear and simple process, where everything is transparent, where car owners know exactly what their car is worth before selling it, and then get a price that they are happy with from a buyer that they trust.”

The findings come as carwow launches new high-profile TV ads to raise awareness of its innovative Sell Your Car service.
