Half of Scots school pupils don't get to take their chosen subjects

More than half of pupils in Scotland can’t take subjects they want because of teacher shortages and school restrictions.

In a study, 56 per cent of youngsters questioned had been turned down for at least one subject from National 4 level onwards.

Modern studies, French, history, human biology and politics were most frequently denied to pupils, according to the survey.

One youngster warned: “I might not be able to take the subjects I need to get to university.”

Scotland's poorest people are more likely to develop cancer

The findings will be presented to MSPs at today’s Scottish Parliament Education Committee as members investigate the issue of narrowing subject choices in schools.

Scottish Tory education spokeswoman Liz Smith said: “This speaks volumes about the narrowing choice of subjects being offered to pupils under the SNP Government.

“Scotland used to be world-renowned for the breadth of education on offer in schools. Now it’s more likely than not that our children will be denied the opportunities for learning they need.”
