Half of motorists stopped by Ayrshire traffic cops committed offences in 'careless driving' sting

Half of motorists stopped in a careless driving sting by Ayrshire traffic cops were committing an offence.

A two-day crackdown on speeding and careless driving in East and South Ayrshire resulted in more than 25 warnings dished out to drivers breaking the speed limit.

In total, 97 vehicles were stopped in the operation carried out on Doonfoot Road, Doonholm Road and Greenfield Avenue in Ayr, then on the A1713 Patna, A713 Waterside, A70 Belston and Hole Road, Coylton across Monday, October 4 and Tuesday, October 5.

Officers from road policing in Ayrshire worked in partnership with Ayrshire Roads Alliance on the days of action.

In addition to one driver being under the influence of drugs and the speeding offences, officers picked up four uninsured drivers, 11 with no MOT, two for seatbelt offences and two for tyre offences.

Inspector Greg Dinnie of the road policing unit said: ‘"The public told us that road safety and tackling traffic offences is a priority for them and as such, it's a priority for us.

“The intention of these action days was to promote road safety in South Ayrshire and influence driver behaviour with a view to reducing speeds, improving the manner of driving and, ultimately, make these roads safer for the public."

Kevin Braidwood, head of the Ayrshire Roads Alliance, added: "The Ayrshire Roads Alliance works closely with Police Scotland to address concerns raised by our local communities.

"Enforcement has a key role to play, with education and engineering, to keep people safe on our roads and I welcome the days of action targeting speeding and careless drivers."
