Half of adults support two week lockdown across the UK in battle against Omicron

Over half of adults support a two week national lockdown this month as a way of controlling Omicron, a new poll has found.

The snapshot also found majority backing for closing nightclubs and stopping large events.

Governments across the UK are reimposing protections over a surge in cases in the new covid variant.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon yesterday advised Scots to limit their socialising to a maximum of three households before and immediately after Christmas, amongst other measures.

And her deputy John Swinney suggested this morning there is potential for even more restrictions.

A Savanta ComRes poll of 1,004 adults, carried out on December 14, reveals large backing for lockdown, which was first imposed in March 2020.

It shows 51% support for a national two-week lockdown starting in December, with support highest in London (58%).

One third opposed a lockdown, while 63% backed the closure of nightclubs and 64% agreeing with a temporary end to large events.

Chris Hopkins, Political Research Director at Savanta ComRes, said: “The Omicron variant looks set to force the hand of the government and, as things stand, it seems the public are braced for another Christmas of disruptions and restrictions.

"With half appearing in support of a lockdown amid rising cases, the Prime Minister again appears to have the public on his side if he does decide to make last-minute changes to the festive period.”
