Half-naked killer arrested in street after knifing pub landlord

A murderer who stabbed a pub landlord 11 times in a frenzied attack was arrested in his boxer shorts on a residential street.

Video footage captured the moment Lee Abbott was detained in Widnes after stabbing Christian Thornton outside the Hammer and Pincers pub in the town on August 11, 2019.

In the footage, which emerged at the time, kickboxer Abbott was shown bare-chested and wearing just underwear - which his trial was told was borrowed.

He was lifted to his feet as police took him in to custody.

Today a jury at Liverpool Crown Court took just an hour and 44 minutes to find Abbott, who had admitted manslaughter, guilty of murder.

During his trial, jurors were told Abbott was arrested at a friend's house, wearing only the borrowed boxer shorts.

His clothes had already been washed and were hanging on a radiator to dry.

He left his victim, a popular landlord whose pub he had previously threatened to burn, with 11 stab wounds.

The killer had claimed he knew he was going to hurt Mr Thornton but didn't think he would kill him.

The jury, who had heard evidence from Abbott's estranged wife Kerri that he had told her he was sexually abused as a child, rejected his defence.

Abbott, 35, who showed no emotion in the dock as he was found guilty, will be sentenced on Friday.
