Half a million euro worth of smuggled cigarettes seized at Dublin Port after being hidden inside boiler

Nearly half a million euro worth of smuggled cigarettes have been seized by Revenue officials after being hidden inside a large industrial boiler arriving on a ship from the Netherlands.

Workers in Dublin Port discovered the smokes on Thursday on a trailer that had arrived on a vessel from Rotterdam.

Customs used an x-ray scanner and detector dog Kelly to make the find.

More than 423,000 cigarettes branded NZ and Minsk were taken.

Revenue said the ciggies have an estimated retail value of €296,000, representing a potential loss to the exchequer of €231,859.

A Lithuanian man in his 40s was arrested and appeared before a sitting of Cloverhill District Court where he was remanded in custody to appear again on Tuesday.

A Revenue spokesperson said: "This seizure is part of Revenue’s ongoing operations targeting the shadow economy and the supply and sale of illegal tobacco products."

A Mercedes Benz Actros tractor and trailer were also seized as part of the operation.

Investigations are ongoing, Revenue said.
