Halewood puts HQ on market as spirits giant searches for new home

The maker of Whitley Neill, Liverpool Gin and Lambrini has put its Merseyside headquarters up for sale after making various changes to the business due to the impact of Covid-19.

Halewood Wines and Spirits has appointed estate agent Savills to sell its 30-acre Huyton logistics base after announcing the closure plan back in August, along with news that it was to offer staff voluntary redundancies.

The firm told BusinessLive on Thursday a number of other nearby locations are being considered for its new base.

The business employs 1,000 people across the world and its core products also include vodka and ginger beer brands. Its current Huyton HQ is capable of producing 28m cases per year through six main bottling lines.

A number of operation roles have been transferred to the firm's Chorley site in Lancashire.

A Halewood spokeswoman said: "As announced earlier this year, the impact of Covid-19 and the recent abolition of duty dilution has led us to make a number of changes to our business, which unfortunately includes the closure and potential sale of the Halewood site in Huyton.

"We can also confirm that alternative warehouse locations are still being considered for a new logistics base, all within a 15 mile radius of Huyton."

Savills confirmed on Tuesday it had been appointed, but the firm said it was unable to comment further.

When announcing the closure earlier this year, Halewood said logistics and customer services teams would have the chance to transfer to the new warehouse.

Despite "strong international growth" announced in summer, the firm employing over 1,000 people worldwide has had a difficult year, due to the global pandemic.

Back in March, following the UK being locked down due to the coronavirus outbreak,  the company said  it was to close its US office in Miami, as well as downsize the Australian business, with senior management also taking "significant pay cuts".
