Hal Steinbrenner had to sign off on all of Brian Cashman's recent trades, which means he had to sign off the first Yankees rebuilding process in a generation.
Steinbrenner, in an interview on Tuesday on the Michael Kay Show on ESPN 98.7, said it was something the team had to do to get off its recent treadmill of mediocrity.
"Nobody in this organization has quit anything," Steinbrenner said. "We did something different this year than our normal way of operations. But I believe overall the majority of our fans like what we did, are happy with what we did, but the results have to pan out, right? The prospects have to pan out. It remains to be seen, but I have no regrets whatsoever."
The first of the new wave of prospects should arrive on Wednesday when catcher Gary Sanchez is called up to DH against Steven Matz of the Mets. Slugger Aaron Judge and others should follow in the season's final two months.
"Fans are excited that we are rebuilding the system," Steinbrenner said. "Fans are excited to start seeing some of the guys they've been hearing about for a long time like Sanchez, hopefully guys like Judge ... There's a lot of excitement in the air as well about our youth and the fact that people are going to start to see it."
Steinbrenner said he thought Cashman has "done a great job throughout this whole process" and he praised manager Joe Girardi for doing "the best he can" with an underachieving roster.
