Yokozuna Hakuho and Kakuryu shocked spectators on the third day of the New Year's Grand Sumo Tournament at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo on Tuesday, with both wrestlers suffering defeats.
Hakuho lost for the second consecutive day, succumbing to the powerful thrusts of No. 1 maegashira Myogiryu, while Kakuryu was pushed out of the ring by No. 2 maegashira Hokutofuji.
Meanwhile, ozeki Takakeisho turned around his torrid start to the tournament, pushing out komusubi Daieisho. Ozeki Goeido, however, lost to the top-ranked maegashira Endo, suffering his third consecutive defeat of the basho.
Goeido's kadoban status means the struggling rikishi must achieve a majority of wins in this tourney to avoid demotion.
Sekiwake Asanoyama maintained his perfect start, forcing out No. 4 maegashira Okinoumi, while sekiwake Takayasu notched his second win of the tourney, slapping down No. 2 maegashira Mitakeumi.
