
Hakone Tozan Railway Co., based in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, has fully resumed operations Thursday for the first time since its partial suspension in the wake of Typhoon No. 19, which struck eastern Japan last autumn. About 100 locals, mainly those involved with local tourism, gathered in celebration along the line and displayed a banner that read, "Welcome back!"
Services for the mountainous 8.9-kilometer section between Hakone-Yumoto and Gora stations had been suspended due to incidents including a landslide that occurred at about 20 locations. Although restoration work was initially expected to last until around autumn, it was accelerated after residents living along the route approved nighttime construction.
