Hakim Ziyech, Thomas Lemar, Wilfred Ndidi and the deadline day deals to complete Arsenal's squad

On the final day of every transfer window football fans rush to shout up the names of players their club should be signing in the final hours of business and with Arsenal that is no exception.

The Gunners have delivered Mikel Arteta two defensive additions in the January transfer window with right-back Cedric Soares joining from Southampton and centre-back Pablo Mari coming in from Flamengo.

Both players should give their head coach a whole range of options over how to set the team up with the arrival of cover for Hector Bellerin that will release Ainsley Maitland-Niles to play more games in midfield.

At the back, Mari is set to be pivotal to how Arsenal build moves from deep given he is left-footed. The demands of Arteta's system are such that he could become an important passing outlet from the back, and relieve Granit Xhaka of his duties to drop into defence as an alternative left-footer.

While these deals will certainly make an impact, some supporters would like to see the club push the boat out for a truly transformative signing before deadline day is through.

On the morning of the final day of the January transfer window football.london asked Arsenal fans who they wanted their club to sign before the close of business and their answers point to a need for further investment in midfield.

There were some other shouts for players to pack more quality into other areas.

RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano is a popular figure amongst followers of the Gunners, so much so that he topped the results of a pre-window transfer survey as the January signing that Arsenal needed more than any other.

Playmakers such as Jack Grealish , James Maddison , James Rodriguez , Kai Havertz and Todd Cantwell were all name-checked as potential game-changers before the end of January but three other individuals stood out from the rest.

Here is a selection of comments from supporters across social media.

Hakim Ziyech

The Moroccan playmaker can line up in midfield or out on the wings or even in the hole behind the striker and has been one of the most creative players in Europe since joining Ajax in 2016 from Twente.

He has even spoken about his desire to one day play for Arsenal, a fact that has only further increased the interest from fans of the Gunners in signing up the 26-year-old.

After proving he can cut it in the Champions League last season, helping to send Ajax into the last four only to lose in the final moments of their semi-final clash with Tottenham Hotspur, Ziyech is a versatile and hard-working creative midfielder about to hit his peak years.

No wonder he is wanted by fans at the Emirates Stadium.

What the fans said

"The lad we need to compete."

"Because Mesut Ozil is almost done."

Thomas Lemar

Do Arsenal really need another out-and-out wide player? In Thomas Lemar, they would be getting a midfielder capable of lining up down the left flank or in the more central position.

The return of Yannick Carrasco to Atletico Madrid, and the Frenchman's own struggles to truly impress under Diego Simeone, sparked talk among fans that a move for the ex-Monaco star could be worth it to the Gunners late on deadline day.

Instead, he is set to remain in the Spanish capital to stay with the club he joined after a move to north London fell apart in the summer of 2018, again on deadline day.

Lemar was lined up as a potential replacement for Alexis Sanchez only for neither move to happen in the end.

What the fans said

"Lemar operates between the line and is comfortable under pressure."

"Big improvement of the squad regarding depth and quality."

Wilfred Ndidi

The Leicester City defensive midfielder was second only to Upamecano in football.london 's pre-January transfer survey with fans pointing to the Nigerian as the solution for screening the Arsenal back four.

Unfortunately, his manager - Brendan Rodgers - ruled out selling any key players during the winter window, with the Foxes currently ahead of Arsenal in the Premier League table.

Still only 23, Ndidi could be a player for the Gunners to come back to in a future transfer window, especially if they return to the Champions League this season.

What the fans said

"Tough as nails with good touch and he can pass. He's better than Naby Keita."

"Workaholic to protect and assist our porous defence."

"Partner him with Lucas Torreira."
