Hajj meningitis warning with just days left to take action

Well Pharmacy, has issued a reminder to those undertaking the Umrah and Hajj pilgrimages to the Holy City of Mecca, in the Hejazi region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, to ensure they receive the vital meningitis ACWY vaccine at least 10 clear days before entry into the country.

Hajj 2022 begins on Thursday, July 7, which leaves a small window to get the vital vaccination. Attended by up to three million people, it is vital that vaccination status is up to date before being granted permission to enter the country.

The meningitis ACWY vaccine is essential for entry into Saudi Arabia, and protects against the meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y. Meningococcal disease can result in meningitis, an infection of the membranes that can cause an inflammation of the tissue around the spinal cord (meninges) and brain.

It is passed from person to person in close contact via nasal or throat droplets, often through coughing, sneezing, kissing, or sharing utensils with a person carrying the bacteria. It's most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults, but can affect anyone and can cause brain damage and death if not diagnosed and treated quickly.

Ifti Khan, Well Superintendent Pharmacist said: “Hajj is an Islamic pilgrimage to the Holy City of Mecca and is attending by millions of people. As part of the entry requirements, the Meningitis ACWY vaccine is essential and protects people from the bacteria that causes certain strains of meningitis.

“With the pilgrimage approaching, now is the time to ensure people get this done. They must be vaccinated a clear ten days before they enter the country. This is also a good opportunity for people to ensure their covid19 vaccine status is up to date.

“We would urge all travellers to check the entry requirement for countries before they arrive, as some rules may have changed since the pandemic. If people are unsure what they need before travel, our pharmacy teams will be more than happy to advise.”
