Haitian journalist gets death threats

There is mounting concern among press freedom and human rights organisations about the safety of Haitian journalist Joseph Guyler Delva. He has received several death threats that are believed to be related both to his investigation into the murder of another Haitian journalist, Jean Dominique, and to his reporting on the controversial election of a former Haitian senator.

The threats followed a court case in Port-au-Prince on December 12 in which Guyler was sentenced to a month's jail for defaming the senator. He is free at present pending his appeal. If he were to be detained, Amnesty International has said it would consider him a prisoner of conscience, imprisoned solely for exercising his right to freedom of expression.
