Haiti seeks support from US and UN troops after president's assassination

Haiti's government has appealed for support from foreign troops to guard key infrastructure following the assassination of the country's president, the BBC reported.

Police say president Jovenel Moise was killed on Wednesday by a group of 28 foreign mercenaries, including retired Colombian soldiers.

Seventeen suspects were detained following a gun battle in the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, while three were killed by police and eight remain at large.

The government in Haiti has urged the US and UN to provide troops.

The US said it has no plans to offer military assistance "at this time", but agreed to send FBI and Department of Homeland Security officials to help with the investigation.

The UN Security Council would have to approve any move to send international troops.

A state of emergency remains in place in Haiti.
