Hairstylist explains why it's crucial you always look down when getting a trim

It's been a long time since we were allowed to go and get our hair cut, with lockdown and everything, but fingers crossed that all changes on April 12.

But when we're finally permitted to return to salons for a much-needed trim, there is one thing a hairstylist wants you to remember.

Posting on TikTok Brooke Udy Clark, who goes by @brookethestylust, urged people to always look down when getting their hair cut - and showed why it was so important.

In her video, Brooke can be seen cutting a woman's hair and says: "Have you ever wondered why your stylist makes you look down for a trim?"

But there's a hidden 'shelf' of hair underneath that's wonky (TikTok)

The woman's hair is damp but initially appears to have had a lovely, neat trim along the bottom, looking all one length.

However, after being instructed to look down, the client's hair is brushed through with a comb to reveal a "shelf" of hair that was hidden underneath and looks very wonky.

Brooke adds: "The underneath may look even but there is a shelf.

"Always look down for your trim."

Her video went viral on the social media platform, being watched over 1.3 million times and garnering more than 73,000 likes.

Hundreds of people also commented on the clip to share their thoughts.

One fellow hairdresser said: "I am always shocked when clients say their previous stylists have never had them do this!"

Another, who had never been asked to look down, wrote: "I always wonder why it is they can never cut a straight line."

"I thought it was because I have long hair and it makes it easier to reach lol," replied a third.

Someone else commented: "I've always wondered by never questioned it. I'm surprised."

Brooke added in a response to one fellow user that she asks all her clients to look down to ensure "an even grow out".
