Hairspray star Nikki Blonsky comes out as gay in video dancing to Diana Ross's 'I'm Coming Out'

Nikki Blonsky has come out as a gay in a TikTok video, dancing to the hit Diana Ross track “I’m Coming Out”.

The actor, best known for her lead role as Tracy Turnblad in the 2007 film Hairspray, shared a video on her TikTok account on Sunday 28 June, a few days before the end of Pride Month.

In the video, Blonsky begins by lying on the grass, singing along to the lyrics of Ross’ 1980 song.

She then stands up, continuing to show off the dance moves for which her character was well-known in her debut film 13 years ago.

In the caption for the video, the 31-year-old wrote: “Hi, it’s Nikki Blonsky from the movie I’m Gay! #pride #imcomingout #hairspray.”

Blonsky’s fans rushed to congratulate the star on coming out as gay, with some receiving responses from the actor.

“If this is true I’m so happy for you girl,” one person wrote, to which Blonsky replied: “It’s incredibly true!!! Thank you so much for the love and support!”

Another person referenced the closing song from Hairspray, writing: “You can not stop the rhythm of two hearts in love todayyyy.”

Several TikTok users expressed how they have looked up to Blonsky ever since she rose to stardom more than a decade ago.

“You’ve always been an idol for me as a plus-sized girl and this just made me even more obsessed!” one person said.

Blonsky responded, stating: “This really touched my heart! All these amazing comments just have me dancing! Sending you virtual hugs!!!!”

During a recent interview with The New York Post, Nile Rodgers said that Ross “didn’t understand” that her song “I’m Coming Out “ was a “gay thing”.

The music producer recollected being inspired to write the track after seeing a group of “Diana Ross impersonators” in a bathroom at GG’s Barnum Room, a Manhattan club popular with transgender patrons.

Ross loved the song, Rodgers said, although she “didn’t understand that that was a gay thing, that that was a person saying, ‘I’m coming out of the closet’”.
