Hairdressers plan to reopen at midnight on July 4 to help desperate customers

Hairdressers in England have said they will open as early as possible after the rules change on Saturday, 4 July.

New rules, announced today by Boris Johnson, permit reopening from that date providing appropriate steps are taken for customer safety.

Salons in Northern Ireland are set to reopen on July 6, hairdressers in Wales will be open for appointment only from July 13, but so far no date has been given for Scotland.

And with a backlog of increasingly scruffy customers to deal with, salons are planning to waste no time at all.

Katie Hancock, owner of The Chair in Canterbury, Kent, will open from midnight to 4pm on 4 July to get a head start on tacking the backlog, The Telegraph reports.

And the backlog could be huge.

Hellen Ward from Richard Ward Hair & Metrospa in London said there were already 2,500 people on the waiting list.

She said her salon would be opening from 8am to 8pm Monday to Saturday to clear the back-log of customers.

Things will be a little different when people are allowed back in, however.

Guidelines from The National Hair and Beauty Federation suggest walk-in salons switch to an appointment-only system - or hand out timed tickets to allow customers to reserve slots.

Salons have been advised to try online consultations to reduce time spent in the chair.

Discussions in person should be kept to a minimum and conducted using the mirror while standing behind the client too.

Salons are also planning temperature tests for clients and staff on arrival, Perspex screens at payment desks, no cash tipping,

Chairs will be spaced further apart while stylists will wear masks, gowns and visors.

Clients will also be expected to wear masks and leave their jewellery, handbags and coats at home if possible.

Ricky Walters, who owns Salon64 in central London said staff will be in full body PPE, and customers will have to take part in temperature checks on arrival when branches reopen.

"We've got a whole new set of rules for when we reopen on July 4," he said.

"We've spent the past month starting again - as a business we've spent at least £2,000 on making sure we have enough safety equipment in place to welcome our customers back."

"Our front door will be kept open at all times to keep the air circulating. Customers will be asked to sanitise their hands at the entrance and visitors will be told to keep their bags and coats with them at all times.

"We want to avoid any unnecessary interaction, so we won't be putting items in the hold," he said.

He added: "We're doing all we can as a business and we want to keep out customers safe. I'm excited to welcome them back from next month. It will be wonderful to see the shop full again."
