Hairdressers and click-to-collect given green light to open from Monday

The long wait for a trim is set to be over from next week as the latest steps out of lockdown were confirmed yesterday.

Hairdressers and barbers were included among various groups given the thumbs up to re-open from Monday (April 5) in a routemap announcement earlier this month - but that decision was made subject to the picture of the virus remaining stable.

At a press briefing yesterday, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon that the lockdown easing measures would go ahead - despite a “plateauing” of Covid-19 case rates.

It means the existing ‘stay at home’ order will be lifted from Friday, with Scots instead being urged to ‘stay local’.

Further restrictions from April 5 will include the opening of non-essential retail stores offering ‘click and collect’ services, as well as garden centres and homeware shops, as well as the aforementioned opening of hairdressers for appointments.

There will also be a relaxation on rules on students returning to on-campus learning for practical subjects including construction, engineering, beauty and hairdressing courses.

Discussing the re-opening of retail outlets, Ms Sturgeon issued a note of caution for people not to rush back immediately when restrictions are lifted on Monday.

She said: “We don’t want big crowds at any of these stores - so although they open from Monday, think about whether you really need to visit them on Monday or if you’re able to wait until later in the week.

“Going later in the week – or later in the month – might mean things are a bit quieter.

“And of course, follow the advice and the instructions given by store staff. These staff will be helping to keep you and other customers safe.

“So don’t get irate with them - if they’re telling you to do or not to do things please follow their advice.”

The rubber-stamping of the lockdown easing comes as 12 more deaths were reported from coronavirus in Scotland on Tuesday.

A further 411 positive cases were recorded in the 24 hours to yesterday, with 250 in hospital with the virus - 23 of these in intensive care.
