Hairdresser reopening in Scotland: here are the changes you could see during the pandemic

If there is one "non-essential' business that we will all be pleased to see reopen once lockdown eases further, it is hairdressers.

From dodgy DIY jobs to bald hair dos, Scots in lockdown have been forced to take hair matters into their own hands. Even Nicola Sturgeon has said she's been styling her own locks.

But what would hair salons look if they were allowed to open back up during the pandemic?

While in Scotland there is no set date for when salons could reopen, the BBC reports how The Hair and Barber Council is calling for ministers to bring England's 4 July date forward with a whole host of changes.

Popular hairdresser chains Toni & Guy, Regis, Supercuts and Francesco, who all have salons in the capital, have joined forces to speak out on the "necessary precautions" that they are putting in place to re-open.

From protective equipment to virtual appointments, this is what the future of hairdressing could look like.

Appointments

Appointments, as we know, will it all have to change to keep people safe and according to the BBC this means "staggering staff shifts and special slots for the over-70s and other vulnerable people."

Nigel Darwin, CEO of Toni and Guy has vowed that clients will be prepped ahead of visits with changes and can be offered "virtual" consultations

Other changes to appointments that we might see are hairdressers only accepting card payments and asking the customer to arrive with already washed hair so that they can "get a haircut and leave"

Much like in shops, staff working at the front desk may be wearing PPE and be fitted with a screen.

There will no longer be magazines when you arrive and instead, you will be asked to use hand sanitiser.

PPE

Regis UK, who own three salons across Edinburgh are planning on giving out masks and gowns to both customers and staff to keep them safe.

Toni & Guy also told the BBC that they plan on using "single-use protection packs" which will have 'masks, towels and hand sanitisers'

The Francesco Group, who also has a number of salons across the capital added that they will tackle COVID-19 with 'two visors' that will be sterilised between customers.

Social distancing measures

Salons including Regis and Supercuts said that will try to follow the 2m social distancing rules when not styling hair.

Salons could also see customers more spaced out with no one by their side and clear plastic screens placed between them.

The EK Hair group will work to make sure that children's toy hair stations are relocated to ensure social distancing.

Regis UK told the BBC that they are ready to deploy thermometers for staff and customers if the government makes it a requirement.
